Department of Romology

The Department of Romology was formed at the university in the summer of 2016 and it started its education mission in the first semester of the academic year 2016/2017. Every student in the institute takes part in romology training for three semesters from this time on. Courses are based on each other. In the first two semesters the history, culture, traditions and current situation of Roma people are presented to the students. In the third semester subject specific training is given to the students. In this framework students in religious training programmes learn Roma mission and minister training while those in non-religious trainings are introduced to the reasons for the current educational conditions and the tasks to be met, the solution practices that really work, and the methodology of integrative and inclusive pedagogy. Our department considers very important that the students receive practical knowledge – determining and helping their future career and successful service and work – apart from obtaining comprehensive theoretical knowledge. In order to achieve this, students are taken to numerous fieldwork (Roma colony, ghetto, Roma school, Roma congregation), sensitizing programmes are organized at the university (exhibition of Roma artists, Roma mission introductions), we joined the Reformed Roma Mission, our students are present in their national meetings, talks are given in the course of the further education of their ministers and we also took part in the work of the Hungarian Christian Roma Professional College Network as well. Close relationship is also maintained with the Wáli István Reformed Roma Professional College where education activity is also performed by colleagues of the department. We have a cooperation with the Roma Mission of the Tiszántúl Reformed Church District. We also try hard to make our students familiar with service among Roma people even during their years of education. A national tender was founded with Romology topic and lecture notes entitled Romology notes has been published from the academic year 2017/2018. Colleagues of our department are active members of Romology scientific life, they research, publish, hold lectures at conferences and teach at several universities as guest lecturers. With the Romology social knowledge postgraduate specialist correspondence course starting from the academic year 2017/2018 the department became part of adult education as well.
