CV

Béla Levente Baráth
(certified theologian, Reformed minister)

He began his education in a primary school in Nyírbátor (1977–1985), then went on to the Rákóczi Secondary Grammar School in Sárospatak (1985–1989). Before starting his theological studies, he did compulsory military service (1989–1990): after three months of basic training in Cegléd, he served at the trauma surgery of the military hospital in Budapest for eight months.
Between 1990 and 1996, he studied at the Debrecen Reformed Theological Academy. Throughout these years, he spent at least a month at the Protestant Theological Institute of Cluj-Napoca, the Budapest Reformed Theological Academy and the Sárospatak Reformed Theological Academy, as an “exchange student”, on several occasions. In the school year of 1993/94, he interrupted his theological studies and went to Detmold in North Rhine-Westphalia for six months to do volunteer work at a conference centre of a youth foundation, then he was employed as an archivist and guide by the Academic Collections of the Cistibiscan Church District in Sárospatak. Parallel to his theological studies, he was also a student of Art History and History at the Lajos Kossuth University.
In 1996, he received his degree in theology at the Debrecen Reformed Theological Academy. Then, for a year, he worked as an assistant minister in Sárospatak, then he became a member of the faculty of the Department of Church History at DRTU. In 1999, he received his degree of secondary school history teacher from Lajos Kossuth University, then, in 2001, his degree of R. E. teacher from DRTU. He spent the school year of 2002/03 at the University of Münster (Westfälische–Wilhelms Universität) with a scholarship. He received his PhD degree in theology in 2004. To further his research, he was awarded the Ferenc Deák grant (2004/05) and the scholarship of the Habsburg Institute (2008/09). He obtained his habilitation in 2011.
The major topics of his research interests include the history of Hungarian Protestant church, society and culture, with special emphasis on the Transtibiscan and Cistibiscan regions. Among his recurring themes are: ambitions of church administration in the Transtibiscan region during the period of Dualism in Hungary; the role of the church in public and higher education in the region; international relations of Hungarian Protestantism; the issue of religious tolerance; the historiography of church history.
Apart from the DRTU, he has worked – from the outset of his university research – as a part-time instructor of specialist courses in several institutions of higher education: István Wargha Teacher Training College (Hajdúböszörmény) – teacher of religious education programme (1996–1998); Ferenc Kölcsey Teacher Training College of the Reformed Church of Hungary – primary school teacher, teacher of religious education, mankind and society, communication, librarian programme (1998–2012); Lutheran Theological University, Nyíregyháza division – teacher of religious education programme (2000–2006); University of Debrecen – liberal arts programme, religious studies specialisation (2009); Partium Christian University, Oradea – diaconical programme (2014–2015). In 2016, he was appointed professor.
